Durante mis vacaciones en casa, en un viaje de tren entre gazpacho y cerezas, mi amiga Ona se desahogó. Tengo la suerte, entre estos amigos cojonudos que tengo, de tenerla a ella y a otras amigas que se han ido de voluntarias, como médicos, a distintos países de África.

During my holiday in Spain, in a train journey, with gazpacho and cherries, my friend Ona poured her heart out. I’m very lucky to have her as a friend and others girls that have been volunteers, as medical doctors, in different countries of Africa.

No importa mucho el nombre del país, de la organización o de las personas concretas a las que me refiero en esta historia, no queremos deshonrar a nadie. Lo importante es el quedarse con el concepto de los problemas que acarrean llevar, trabajar o colaborar con una ONG.

Doesn’t matter the name of the country, the organization or the specific people involved in this story. The thing is to understand the problems that involve working or cooperating with NGOs.

Me hablaba de favoritismos, de ineptos, de números, muchos números. Corrupción. Detrás de un centro de nutrición para niños en inanición, sorpréndanse, damas y caballeros, lo importante eran las altas, los números en un papel. No importaba, dicho por directivos, si realmente se curaban, si se requerían atenciones hospitalarias, si se hacía un correcto seguimiento. Como cuando uno limpia el polvo para que dé el pego, pues igual. No vamos a entrar en lo de inflar gastos, facturas o sueldos elevados. Eso ya es otra cosa.

She spoke about favouritisms, useless people, numbers, lots of numbers. Corruption. Behind a nutrition center for children in starvation situation, surprisingly, ladies and gentlemen, the important thing there were the number of discharged children, the numbers on a paper. Said by the managers, it didn’t matter whether they were really cured or not, whether they needed to be send to the hospital… I won’t go into expenses, bills or high salaries. That’s another problem.

Conclusión. La gente que va de voluntaria, que ya de por sí se ve limitada por su temporalidad en el lugar, se lleva un malsabor de boca, que comparte con los locales, que saben todo eso y más. Y queda la resignación y el aceptar que eso es mejor que nada, que eso nunca cambiará.

Conclusion. The volunteers, already limited by temporality in the nutrition center, leave the country with this bad taste in the mouth, shared with the local people, that know and see everything and more. And resignation is the feeling you take back with you, and the thought of that is better than nothing.

A mi esa actitud me revienta y yo no puedo cambiar nada, simplemente concienciarme y tener en cuenta, con las experiencias de mis amigas, que hay ONG y ONG hay, y que no solo las buenas intenciones son motor. Pero, claro está, que hay otras muchas ONG que hace cosas maravillosas.

I hate that attitude and I can’t change anything. I can simply be aware of it and bare in mind my friends experiences, and think that there are many type of NGOs and good intention is not the only motor to action. Obviously, there are other NGOs that do a great job.
