Almost two weeks of holiday, enjoying new landscapes in warmer temperatures while eating as good as I could. All in four main pit stops.
Casi 2 semanas de vacaciones, difrutando de paisajes nuevos con temperaturas más altas y comiendo como tanto y tan bien como podía.
1. VALENCIA
Starting point with the excuse of a Conference. I spent 4 nights and 4 days, really. I was mostly attending the conference, but on the third day I decided it was a shame to not see the main landmarks so I went for a brief visit by myself.
Paid accommodation and some meals. Self funded options, in general, good choices.
Fue mi punto de partida con la excusa de un congreso. Pasé cuatro noches y cuatro días, que la mayoría transcurrieron por al zona del Congreso, más bien alejada del centro, pero al tercer día ya me cansé y decidí hacer al respecto. Me fui de paseo por mi cuenta, a ver algo más.
Alojamiento y mayoría de comidas fueron financiadas, aunque las que salieron de mi bolsillo no fueron malas decisiones tampoco.

Orxata or Orchata, made of chufa, tipical from Valencia, amazing sweet white drink. Despite the two centuries of tradition, this was not the best I’ve tried, but felt amazing.

2. DELTA DE L’EBRE
As an enthusiast of the Catalan landscape, I felt that not having been in the Delta de l’Ebre was a SIN. Amazing views: natural park, wetlands, birds, rice fields…
Fan como soy de los paisajes catalanes, no haber estado en el Delta de l’Ebre era un pecado mortal. Increíbles paisajes, el parque natural, los arrozales, los pajarillos…
Stayed in DeltaHotel in Deltebre, right in the centre of the Delta. Low season, so almost empty, cheaper, all the staff for us and the youngest of all of them.
Nos alojamos en el DeltaHotel en Deltebre, en el centro del Delta. Siendo temporada baja, estaba casi vacío, era más barato, todos estaban pro nosotros y éramos los más jóvenes del lugar.
And from Deltebre to Sant Jaume de l’Enveja, Poble Nou del Delta, Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Amposta, L’Ampolla, l’Illa de Buda… Following one of the multiple maps and signs that we found. The weather wasn’t amazing, so we could’nt cycle around as we were recommended to do. We drove and ate rice instead.
Bomba rice is produced here, the same that Waitrose calls “rissotto or paella rice”. That one.
Best place to eat it? For us, in Can Paquita in El Poble Nou del Delta. It was a suggestion from a member of the staff of a petrol station, as well as bird hunter.
El Poble Nou del Delta is mainly a town with restraurants. The speciality in all of them is rice and different types of bird in it as well as sea food. Note: Not every rice dish is paella. So off we went to Can Paquita. Good sign? Workers coming in. Got in and packed. A second good sign. Third good sign? Very normal people, low-middle class and families. We were offered the menu (la carta) but I quickly asked for the menu of the day (good tip for people not used to Menú del Día). And the feast started. Price: 12€ each.
De pueblo en pueblo y tiro porque me toca. Lo ideal sería andar en bicicleta, pero como el tiempo no acompañaba, usamos el coche para cargar nuestras panzas.
Comimos arroz de la tierra. Y el mejor sitio fue Can Paquita en El Poble Nou del Delta. Me lo sugerió un trabajador de una gasolinera que discutía alegremente la caza de un pájaro que tenía en la nevera, listo para echarlo al arroz. Le pregunté dónde tenía que ir para comer esa exquisitez y mu amablemente me soltó una retahíla de restaurantes de los cuales solo estaba abierto Can Paquita.
Buena señal es llegar a un restaurante y ver a trabajadores comiendo allí. Menú del día asequible, además de las familias y demás gente corriente que se aglomeraban en el comedor. Al hablar inglés, se nos acercaron temerosos con la carta. “Que teniu menú del dia?”, ya es otro tema. Y allí es cuando empezamos a hartarnos por 12€ por cabeza. Y de allí a Barcelona.
And after 3 days and 2 nights stuffing ourselves, we headed off to Barcelona.
3. BARCELONA
I’ve lived in Barcelona city for many years and even though there’s loads to see still I mainly visited friends this time (who nicely offer us shelter and lock us in ;)).
But something I wanted to show El Hombre was Montserrat. Some people say it’s a must, others can’t be bothered. It is a huge Sanctuary in the mountains for the black Virgin Mary of Montserrat, the patron of Catalunya as well as Saint George. T
He vivido en Barcelona ciudad unos cuantos años, así que la verdad me limité a visitar amigos y familia. Pero una cosa que quería enseñar a El Hombre era Montserrat.
Algunos creen que no vale la pena. A mi esas montañas me impresionan. La Mare de Déu de Montserrat, la Moreneta, patrona de Catallunya, se rodea de varios picos, que los más valientes escalan y los más perezosos sube en cremallera o funicular.
Waiting for the Rack railway, the best way to go up, not get tired and get amazing views.
But it is also very popular to hike all the way up.
4. GIRONA
Well, I can just say it’s one of the best provinces of Spain, due to its ideal location.
Both the city
and the rest of it. Santa Margarida volcano, in la Garrotxa.
And we spent 4 days enjoying it as well as the family. But lucky us, we went during Fires de Girona, the main holiday of the city, which patron is Sant Narcís (29th of October) so fun fair, chestnuts, fireworks, drinks and music for everyone!
Ni que decir tengo que es una de las provincias más bonitas de España. Con una localización ideal, tanto la ciudad, como la costa o la montaña tiene su encanto.
Además del tiempo en familia, disfrutamos de la Fires de Girona en honor a nuestro patrón Sant Narcís, así que la ciudad se llena de olor de fuegos artificiales, castañas, atracciones, comida y música para todos los gustos.
