Recientemente he tenido la oportunidad de visitar Menorca con El Hombre. Fuimos a mediados de mayo, cuando las temperaturas no eran altas y la isla estaba casi desierta. Más tranquila, más barata, mejor. 🙂
Menorca es una isla pequeña y asequible, así que ves bastante en poco tiempo. Solo necesitas un coche y un mapa. Aquí una guía rápida de lo que hicimos:
I recently had the opportunity to visit this amazing island with El Hombre. It was mid May, so the temperature was mild and the island was almost empty. Quiter, cheaper, better. 🙂
Menorca is a small island so you can see a lot in a short time. At least that’s what felt. You just need a car and a map. Here a brief travel guide of what we did:
Day 1
Ciutadella
Directos desde el aeropuerto, decidimos hacer la primera toma de contacto con la ciudad. Visitamos las calles principales e hicimos compras rápidas y básicas para pasar los días.
Straight from the airport, visited the centre and did some basic shopping for the days ahead.
Sa Caleta
Al sud de Ciutadella, zona residencial y hotelera donde nos hospedábamos.
Después de mucho buscar en Airbnb, apartamentos y hoteles, un mini apartamento del hotel Prinsotel en Sa Caleta acabó siendo el ganador. De self-catering y a nuestras anchas. Estando en temporada baja aún, la zona era tranquilísima y los turistas mínimos, pero está claro que no iría en temporada alta.
Comimos una fresquísima cena a base de gazpacho y pescado en el Restaurante Cova Sa Nacra. Buenísimo.
It’s on the south of Ciutadella, where we found our hotel. Being in low season, we found it to be cheap, quite and very convenient but probably that’s not the case in high season, when I wouldn’t stay there.
There is a very nice restaurant just outside Prinsotel, by the sea, Cova Sa Nacra. Good quality/price.
Day 2
Cala Macarella & Cala Macaralleta
Con toda la calma del mundo, nos dirijimos a unas de las calas más bonitas de la isla según las guías.Al fin de la estrecha carretera, veréis que hay dos párquings, uno gratuito y el otro no. El gratuito está bastante retirado, pero el camino a la playa a través del bosque es bonito y nada pesado, así que te ahorras unos eurillos y haces ejercicio.
Cala Macarella es preciosa, pero el restaurante pinta poco allí, aunque sus platos combinados te pueden sacar de apuros. Puedes quedarte ahí o seguir andando 15 minutos y subir la cuesta que te llevará a unas cuevas, interesantes de ver. Después sigue el caminillo hasta Cala Macaralleta. Más pequeña, más turquesa, más bonita.
The second day we drove to two of the most beautiful beaches according to the travel guide books. After the narrow road drive, you’ll get to a point where you have to choose free or paid parking. I’d suggest go for the free one, since the walk down the beach through the woods it’s beautiful.
Once you are in Cala Macarella, where there’s a big restaurant, you can either stay there or go to the end of it and climb up the mountain towards some caves worth seeing. Then carry on until you get to Cala Macaralleta. I’d say it’s 15′ and mild. But it’s worth it. It’s smaller, quieter and prettier.
Cap d’Artutx
Cuando ya estábamos hartitos de playa, nos fuimos para el Cap d’Artutx, que lo encontramos cerrado, pero solo ver los alrededores merece la pena.
Se encuentra en una zona residencial de casas hobbit de cal blanca, a cual más bonita. La vegetación es minimalista, si se me permite llamar así a los típicos arbustillos y matojos autóctonos. Y el faro es sacado de un cuento. 🙂
After a long day on the beach, we headed towards Cap d’Artutx, in the middle of a residential area with hobbit white houses, beautiful vegetation and a nicer lighthouse.
Ciutadella
No queríamos irnos sin ver Ciutadella de noche, que sin duda es preciosa. Sus calles estrechas aún tienen más encanto iluminadas y el agua, en la oscuridad de la noche.
We didn’t want to miss Ciutadella at night. Went for a walk through its narrow roads and alleys, even nicer when lightened up and the waters, under the dark of the night.
Day 3
Platja de Binimel·là y Cala Pregonda
Otra joya que encontramos después de alguna que otra lectura acertada. En el norte de la isla, cogiendo la carretera en Es Mercadal, que parece que te va a llevar al fin del mundo, para acabar llegando a una zona de párquing y un restaurante. Hay que bajar a la Platja de Binimel·là y desde ahí cojer el Camí de Cavalls y andar 20 minutos hasta llegar a Cala Pregonda. Un paraíso. Y lo que te encuentras en el camino también.
Another treasure found by reading some travel guides. On the north of the island, you need to get the road in the village of Es Mercadal. At the end of it, you will get to a parking and a restaurant. The first beach you find is Platja de Binimel·là but if you keep walking for 20′ on the Camí de Cavalls, towards the left, you’ll get to Cala Pregonda. It feels like paradise as well as what you find on your way there.
Es Mercadal
Después de tanto sol y arena, nos tomamos un menú del día en unos de los varios restaurantes en el centro de Es Mercadal cuyo nombre no recuerdo. Pero estaba bueno.
After a lot of sun&sand we headed back to Es Mercadal for a quick lunch in one of the several restaurants in the village.
Santuari del Toro
Para hacer la digestión con buenas vistas, nos subimos hasta lo alto de El Toro, al Santuario, desde donde se puede avistar toda la isla y más allá. Vale la pena.
No siesta time. Back to the car to drive the mountain up towards El Toro with a Shrine at the top. Amazing views of the whole island and the blue sea around. Very worth it.
Parc Natural de S’Albufera – Cap de Favàritx
Y de allí fuimos rápidamente al nordeste de la isla, en medio del Parc Natural de S’albufera, al Cap de Favàritx y su faro. Los alrededores son parajes protegidos por contener unas balsas “migrantes”, zona inundable El Prat, donde el agua se estanca y desaparece a lo largo del año y contiene microecosistemas únicos.
Looking for more amazing views we headed towards the area of the Natural Park of S’albufera, where there is another cute lighthouse on the Cap de Favàritx. It is also one of the largest protected wetland areas of the Balearian Islands.
Ferreries
Ya yendo para nuestra casa por unos días, nos paramos en Ferreries para ver el outlet de zapatos Mascaró y Pretty Ballarinas y tomarnos algo refrescante. La isla es bien conocida por su artesanía en pieles y zapatos, de ahí sus Avarques o Aubarques o Menorquines.
To finish up the day, we stopped at the heart of the island, Ferreries, to check out the shoewear outlet Mascaró and Pretty Ballarinas and have some drinks to freshen up. The island is well known for its craft in leather and shoewear, specially its Avarques o Aubarques o Menorquines.
Day 4
Maó
Último día y a fin de estar cerca del aeropuerto, visitamos la capital, Maó. Paseíllo por el puerto, el centro y el no tan centro. Con mucho encanto, con sus subidas y bajadas, pero es rápida de ver. Desayunamos ensaïmada, compramos la sobrassada reglamentaria y algún que otro detalle y nos fuimos a recorrer los alrededores, para volver luego más tarde y desgustar sus quesos.
Last day of the trip that, in order to be close to the airport, we spent in Maó and surroundings. Hilly city, with nice centre and port. We had the local ensaïmada for breakfast, bought some sobrassada to take away and headed to the a nearby town. But we later came back to taste their cheese.
Cala Binibèquer o Binibeca
Otra vez, una zona residencial de casas de cal blancas habitadas por ingleses y alemanes, mayoritariamente. Llama mucho la atención lo arregladita que está la zona, donde abundan pubs y supermarkets.
Pasamos la mañana en la preciosa y tranquila Cala Binibèquer, donde hay chiringuito y lavabos.
From Maó we drove to Binibèquer, a town full of beautiful white little houses inhabited mostly by English and German people. It also have some pubs and supermarkets around.
We spent the morning in the quite Cala Binibèquer, where there’s bar and toilets.
Matando el tiempo antes de nuestro vuelo, dimos con esta fortaleza, al lado de Maó. La encontramos ya cerrada, pero creo que vale verla y conocer la historia de como se ha protegido la isla de sus muchos atacantes.
Found this fortress next to Maó while killing time to head to the airport. Massive and robust, looks scary… We found it closed but I believe it’s worth paying a visit and get to know more about the history of the attacks and defense the island has been through.
En conclusión, Menorca es una pasada. Si tuviera más tiempo, ya visto lo más básico, me dedicaría más al senderismo. El Camí de Cavalls (camino de caballos) es una antigua ruta que rodea la isla, que se puede hacer tanto a pie, bici o caballo.
Los parajes, su vegetación y geología singular, mayoritariamente volcánica, la hacen única.
In conclusion, I loved Menorca. If I had more time or the next time I visit, I would definitely do more hiking. The Camí de Cavalls (The Horse Path) it’s an old rute that surrounds the whole island and you can walk or cycle it as well as do it on a horse.
The landscapes, its vegetation and singular geology, mostly volcanic, make this island unique.
